“His name is Jesse Kennedy. They call him The Gentleman.” Archer spoke from across the changing room as Faith massaged my shoulders. Her thumbs dug in deep between the muscles, catching my breath with every twinge. “You’re a monster. You’re The Hunter. You know you can beat him.”

I nodded slowly. No, I wasn’t sure. I’d never been in a real ring before and I had no idea who this Jesse was aside from having to shake his hand at the weigh-in.

“You’re the crowd favourite,” Archer said as he crouched down in front of me and began taping my hands. “I made sure of that.”

“How?”

He winked. “Never you mind. I’ve got your back, boy. Just go out there and take this fight.”

I nodded again, rolling my neck into Faith’s touch, closing my eyes and allowing her to ready my body for my debut. Archer had found me a sponsor but I didn’t care who it was. He’d asked me what colour shorts I wanted, but I didn’t care about that either. He’d asked what colour tape, what music I wanted to come out to, what I wanted the crowd to be told about me…I didn’t care about any of it. I’d told Archer to fuck off and do whatever he wanted.

You’ll come to regret that, Benny.

I kept my eyes on the painted concrete wall ahead of me, refusing to look down at Archer between my legs, refusing to feel the warmth and confidence in Faith’s hands; I refused to think about anything but the fight.
